Work Experience
We are committed to working closely with Schools and Colleges to support young people gain practical experience of industry based work. We believe work experience offers you the opportunity to work alongside adults as part of a team, develop and practice a range of skills, become more confident in your abilities and relate your school curriculum and qualifications in the workplace.
The experience enables you to make informed choices about your future and help prepare you for the world of work, while offering us the opportunity to showcase some of the career opportunities that exist in our industry.
Typically placements last either one or two weeks although in some cases placements can be extended with students attending over a number of weeks for an agreed number of hours each week.
Application Process
Step 1 – Initial contact is usually made by telephone or email, after which you will be sent a work experience application form and a generic young persons risk assessment. The application form needs to be completed and sent back to us. If you are invited for an interview, the risk assessment must be read by you and your parents (or guardians), signed and returned to us.
At this stage (if you are at school) the school will normally require you to complete a work experience placement form that acts as a combined health and safety questionnaire, job description and risk assessment form that parents and students are required to sign.
Step 2 - Once the formal application is received, it is reviewed by HR and then passed to the appropriate manager. You will be asked to make contact with them directly to arrange to come in for an interview.
Step 3 - The interview process allows us to find out a bit more about each other and discuss how we can provide a work experience which best suits your interests or career aspirations. We don’t restrict you to just one job and will try to offer as much variety as possible. This activity will give you valuable interview experience.
Step 4 - After the interview, if we feel able to offer you a work placement, we will draw up an individual plan for your time with us, detailing the areas to be covered and any projects we can arrange for you .
Step 5 – A formal offer is made confirming the plan together with details about dress code, induction training , start and finish times etc.
Step 6 - Your work experience will begin with a company induction before being shown to your relevant department to go through your work plan in more detail.
