Retinal imaging system uses 400W power supply capable of conduction cooling
Retinal imaging is replacing traditional pupil dilation for eye examination. For the patient, there is no waiting for the eyes to dilate and no requirement to have a friend or family member drive them back from the appointment. Imaging allows the doctor to see 80% of the eye compared to just 15% for dilation.
When developing a new retinal scanner, engineers required a 400W 12V source. To avoid acoustic noise and airflow, a compact product with no fan was required. The power supply needed to have medical certification, a 5V standby voltage and inhibit capability. A cover was also requested.
A conversation with the local TDK-Lambda salesperson resulted in the medical CUS400M-12/AX5 power supply being sampled.
The CUS400M/A is just 142 x 90 x 39.5mm in size, has an integral baseplate for conduction cooling, a protective cover, and the ability to deliver 250W convection with 400W peak power for extended time periods. The X5 option provided the 5V standby, a remote on/off signal, and a DC Good signal.
