As the complexity of automotive electronics continues to grow, the distribution boxes now contain more than just fuses and connector terminals. A variety of relays, both mechanical and electronic, are commonly located in the box. For reliability, quality and safety reasons 100% automated functional testing is required. Programmable power supplies are preferred as they allow the test systems to be used with multiple box types.

One manufacturer of automotive test systems is now using TDK-Lambda’s Genesys™ programmable power supplies to verify electrical functionality of vehicle distribution boxes. Two models were chosen; a 0-30V 0-25A half rack model with a LAN interface for remote programming and a 0-8V 2U high model with the capability to supply 0-300A. The latter was configured with a 3-phase input to balance the input currents between the phases. Price and performance was cited as the reason for the product choice.
