As well as being an efficient coolant for use in transformers, switchgear and other electrical apparatus, oils are used as part of the electrical insulation between internal live parts. It is critical to regularly test the electrical properties of the oil as they can change with degradation due to oxidation, acids, sludge, gas and water absorption. Oil test sets are used to test samples of the oils and therefore must be robust and intrinsically safe, which is why one manufacturer is now using the PXF series of DC-DC converters from TDK-Lambda. These fully-isolated converters feature six-sided shielded metal cases which reduces the radiated noise to meet EN55022 Level A specifications for conducted and radiated emissions.
