The beauty about gearless wind turbines is their low system weight, which is achieved by replacing the traditional gearbox with a low-speed, permanent magnet generator. A growing number of wind turbine manufacturers are producing this type of turbine, for higher power ratings and offshore applications, because they offer potentially higher reliability (due to fewer parts) and reduced maintenance costs.
