All gas discharge lamps require an electronic ballast to operate – the ballast provides a high initial voltage to initiate the discharge, then rapidly limits the lamp current to safely sustain the discharge. Using the TDK-Lambda GWS-500-48 in series, the manufacturer achieved the required 96V start-up lamp voltage.
