The most common sources of Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks are industrial cooling water systems, domestic hot water systems and, of course, spas. As the bacteria can grow very quickly, it must be rapidly detected. Old methods which involved growing cultures for a period of up to 10 days are being superseded by much faster methods involving immuno assaying or DNA amplification.
