As the efficiency level of a power supply is increased, the wasted power decreases \u2013 so let\u2019s compare a 91% efficient 400W power supply with a 94% efficient version. Just 3% improvement doesn\u2019t sound much, does it? However, if we were to translate this into wasted energy, it is more revealing.<\/p>\n<p>The 91% efficient version dissipates about 40W; for a 94% efficient power supply, on the other hand, only about 26W is wasted. That\u2019s 14W less heat &#8211; in other words, more than one third less generated by the power supply within the end equipment. The net result is that the operating temperature inside the end equipment is lower, resulting in higher reliability \u2013 exactly what is required for professional electronic equipment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emea.lambda.tdk.com\/uk\/cfe\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uk.tdk-lambda.com\/uk\/files\/2012\/03\/Wasted_Power_chart-copy-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"Wasted Power for a 400W output power supply\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tdklambdablog.wpenginepowered.com\/uk\/files\/2012\/03\/Wasted_Power_chart-copy-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tdklambdablog.wpenginepowered.com\/uk\/files\/2012\/03\/Wasted_Power_chart-copy.jpg 993w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Achieving 94% efficiency is not easy, so there are very few power supplies on the market today at this high level.
