TDK Corporation is pleased to announce that TDK-Lambda UK has been shortlisted for this year\u2019s Elektra Awards<\/a> under two categories: Educational Support and Power System Product of the Year. Organised by the market leading electronics magazine, Electronics Weekly<\/a>, the Elektra Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies across Europe, presenting best-practice in key areas including, innovation, sales growth and employee motivation.<\/p>\n

Educational Support <\/strong>
\nTDK-Lambda has 25 employees engaged in STEM\/School activities, with five STEM Ambassadors. Working closely with a range of organisations, they actively support and encourage young people to develop valuable technical skills throughout their studies to enhance their future career. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs a design and manufacturing enterprise based in North Devon, some distance from large cities and universities, attracting and retaining sufficient engineering talent can often be difficult,\u201d says Tim Puttick, Operations and Environmental Compliance Manager for TDK-Lambda UK, who has been involved with promoting many STEM initiatives in local schools, colleges and universities for a number of years. It is estimated that the number of young people the company supports directly is around 300 a year through seven local schools\/colleges\/universities on various events, programmes and projects. <\/p>\n

Power Supply Product of the Year<\/strong>
\nWith a 37-year legacy of modular power supply developed, the latest product \u2013 the QM series<\/a> \u2013 which will become the product of choice for next generation equipment in the fields of medical and home healthcare, test and measurement, broadcast, communications and renewable energy. Since its launch in September 2016, the QM has secured several design wins in critical medical and T&M applications worldwide and is under evaluation in dozens of similar projects.<\/p>\n

With an operating efficiency of up to 91 percent, the power supply enables machine builders to reduce utility costs for their end users. As power loss is reduced, less heat needs dissipating, therefore a low speed fan can be used in the power supply \u2013 when used in equipment that operates in close proximity to a patient or in a recording studio, the low acoustic noise is a decisive factor.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, our new QM modular power supply could be 100% manufactured and assembled in a low labour cost country [LLCC ],\u201d says Phil Scotcher, General Manager, TDK-Lambda UK. \u201cThis does not make sense for us: customer requirements demand mass customisation, with a high mix, low volume, variable demand model.\u201d <\/p>\n
